The Cathedral of Christ the Savior
If you want to ask the Russian about this building, then better say it as — Khram Khrista Spasitelya, so there is a chance that you will be understood. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior – the famous Cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church. It was built in 1883, construction lasted almost 44 years. Nowadays it is the tallest Orthodox Christian church in the world. This church was erected as a symbolic grave of warriors killed during the war with Napoleonic France in 1812.
The current building is reproduction of the original one, which was destroyed in 1931 on the order of Soviet government. Josef Stalin planned to erect on this place Palace of Soviets – the tallest construction in the world. His plans could not be completed because of the Fascist Germany in 1941. Instead of this, in 1960 on this place was opened an outdoor swimming pool, which existed up to the collapse of the Soviet Union. According to legend, the place was cursed and a lot of people drowned in this pool, because it was built on the bones of ancestors.
Only in 1990 was decided to build new Cathedral – an exact copy of the destroyed church by Joseph Stalin in the first half of 20th century. Nowadays it is not only center of Russia Orthodox church, but also where everyone can enjoy the grandeur of the monument architecture. On the territory of the temple you could find beautiful park with fountains and benches – place where you find harmony with yourself.
Tips & tricks
If you decide to go inside Cathedral of Christ the Saviour during the service, try to behave as quietly as possible and do not attract attention. Women’s head should be covered with a headscarf, as well as female legs closed with a long skirt (no pants or jeans). Men cannot enter with a headgear on and with opened legs (no shorts are allowed).
The infamous punk rock band «Pussy Riot», who conducted an unauthorized opposition concert against Putin’s policy during church service, got real prison sentence in 2012 – two years for each participant.
